A Dhaka court yesterday dismissed three criminal cases filed by Jubo Mahila League on March 21 against the inspector general of police (IGP) and 14 police officials due to lack of government approbation.

Jubo Mahila League leaders Farida Yasmin Jhuma, Asma Akter Luna and Sabina Akter Tuhin filed the cases with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court

against the accused for attacking the opposition activists during their Election Commission Secretariat siege programme and hartal on March 12 and 13.

The accused are IGP Abdul Quayyum, Additional IG (Headquarters) Anwarul Iqbal, Additional IG (Special Branch) Fakrul Ahmed, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) Director General Abdul Aziz Sarker, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mizanur Rahman, DMP Additional Commissioner Faruk Ahmed, deputy commissioners of police Mazharul Haque (north) and Kohinur Miah (west), Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station Shahinur Rahman, OC of Dhanmondi Police Station Harun-or-Rashid, an unknown second officer and constables Pinki, Faruq, Dulal and Aminul.

Farida Yasmin alleged that a team of police led by Kohinur Miah, Mazharul Haque and Shahinur Rahman assaulted a Jubo Mahila League procession in front of the Dhanmondi Government Boys' School on March 12 when it was going towards the EC Secretariat.

Several Jubo League leaders, activists and general people were injured in the attack.

In her complaint, Asma Akter said that the accused attacked a Jubo League procession when it was going towards the Samorita Hospital from Russell Square during hartal on March 13.

Sabina Akter also complained about attacks on the procession the same day.

After the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Mizanur Rahman recorded the statements of the complainants and directed them to bring government approval for taking the allegations into cognisance against the police officials.

Contacted, Advocate Kamrul Islam told The Daily Star that they would go to the higher court against the order.
