Export-import through Benapole and Bhomra land ports was disrupted for the second day yesterday as the port users on the Indian side continued their strike.

Talks between the strikers and Benapole customs officials at Benapole check post yesterday ended without any results.

Indian port users are demanding restoration of previous rules for entry of their trucks into Bangladesh. But the customs officials stood firm on new rules that required separate invoice, packing list and identification of goods carried by every truck.

NBR Chairman Khairuzzaman Chowdhury visiting Benapole told the Indian port users and Bangladeshi importers to abide by the new rules.

Refusing to yield to their demands, Chowdhury said Bangladesh will not be affected much if the strike continued for an indefinite period.

Another report from Satkhira said the Indian users of Bhomra land port continued their strike yesterday.

They went on the strike on Tuesday protesting the killing of an Indian woman by the BSF on their border, thinking her a Bangladesh national.

A BSF man gunned down the woman along the barbed wire fencing inside the Indian territory at Ghojadanga opposite to Bhomra land port in the afternoon.

Angry villagers set ablaze two BSF jeeps, ransacked the BSF outpost and demanded punishment to the killer. Indian port users, who were also subjected to BSF harassment, joined the villagers and went on a strike.

Rafiqul Islam, immigration official at Bhomra land port said about 1,000 goods-laden trucks remained stranded on both sides of the port.
