A top outlaw was killed in ’crossfire’ with police in Chuadanga, while outlaws slaughtered a farmer in Mchcrpur on Tlicsday.

Criminals hurled bombs on the compound of- Meherpur Deputy Commissioner's (DC) residence.

Police arrested Sahidul Islam alias ’Kata Sahi', a top criminal of Chuadanga district on Tuesday noon when he went to collect toll at a BNP leader’s house at village Dinonathpur in Sadar upazila at about 3:pm.

Sahidul demanded Tk 1 lakh toll to local BNP leader Nurunnabi Num several days ago and threatened to kill him if he failed to pay. As the criminal entered the house, police waiting at the house arrested him.

Sahidul, 32, hailing from village Gulshanpara in Sadar upazila was accused in 20 cases including 5 of murders, police said.

Following his confessional statement, police raided village Dinnonathpur in Sadar upazila and seized a pistol and two rounds of bullets.

While returning to the police station, the team came under fire by Sahidul's aides.

The law enforcers returned fire, triggering a shootout for about an hour, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station said.

Dying to escape from the police van, Sahidul received bullets and died on the spot.

Police sent his body to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

In Meherpur, outlawed cadres slaughtered a farmer at village Chalkmallikpur in Sadar upazila on the same night.

A gang entered the house of farmer Mizanur Rahman, 37, took him to a nearby field and slaughtered him there, police sources said.

Police recovered the body and sent to Meherpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

In Meherpur, unidentified criminals hurled a bomb on the compound of Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) residence in the court area on Tuesday night.

"I suspect it was a simple cracker blasted by someone as an act of fun," said the DC Mir Ahmad, talking over telephone.

Later police seized splinters and a pair of sandals from the spot
