Members of the civil society yesterday called on the people of different faiths to show mutual tolerance and respect for religions of others in the month of Ramadan.

Ramadan will begin in the middle of this month while Durga Puja of Hindu community will take place at the same time, they said in a statement.

People of the country are pious and they are always respectful to each other's religion, they said and called for promoting the values of tolerance.

The signatories to the statement include Ajoy Roy of Sammilita Samajik Andolon, Hena Das of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Sultana Kamal of Ain o Salish Kendra, former teacher of Dhaka University Dr Ajoy Roy, Shahnaz Sumi of Bangladesh Nari Pragati Sangha, Barrister Shafiq Ahmed of Gonotantrik Ainjibi Samity, Chowdhury Khurshid Alam of Bangladesh Teachers' Association, Dr Wazedul Islam Khan of Trade Union Kendra, Nurul Amin of Jatiya Sramik Jote and Subrata Chowdhury of Mahanagar Sarbojanin Puja Committee.
