The BSF authorities have handed over to its Bangladesh counterpart a fresh list of 195 camps of Indian insurgents in the neighbouring country with a request to dismantle them.

The list was handed over to Deputy Director General of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Brig Gen Md Ibrahim Khalil in the bi-annual meeting held between Inspector Generals of BSF and an eightmember BDR team held at Comilla from August 2 to 5.

Addressing a press conference in Shillong on Friday night, IG of BSF's Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland (AMM-N) Frontier, SC Srivastava said the list had exact locations and other details of the camps. Previously, a list of 192 camps of insurgents was given to them.

About the BDR's reaction, Srivastava said as usual Bangladesh denied the presence of Indian militants on its soil and, on the other hand, placed a list of 29 camps of its 'most wanted criminals' who, it alleged, were hiding in India.

The IG said the BDR authorities kept mum when an offer for a joint operation by the two border guarding forces to dismantle the camps from both the countries was made.

Asked about the usefulness of such meetings which virtually turned out to be a merry-go-round exercise with BDR denying Indian militants' existence and handing over a list of its criminals sheltering in the North East every time the BSF asked them to dismantle the ultras' camps, he said "We cannot have any other via media to put our points before them."

Reiterating the BSF's point of view, the IG said they have got evidence that the BDR personnel were mingling with the militantsand 'protecting' them also.

On how militants were crossing into the other side of the boundary manned by BSF, Srivastava said the force was trying its "level best with limited resources and terrain being difficult and border porous".

"We cannot be sure which area they (militants) are coming from. We are trying our level best," he said denying any intelligence failure in this regard.

Srivastava said the BSF authorities also reiterated the issue of border fencing constructed within 150 yards of international boundary but the BDR objected to the proposal.

According to the BDR, a joint agreement between the two countries stipulated that a distance of 150 yards would have to be maintained for border fencing and no 'defence structure' would be constructed in-between.

Countering the argument, the BSF said the fencing was not a defence structure but a 'barrier' to stop trans-border crime. To this, the BDR said they were awaiting response from its higher authorities.

The issue of illegal entrance by Bangladeshi nationals was deliberated at length and the BSF authorities expressed their 'dissatisfaction' on the influx.

Quoting a recent report of what has been termed first of its kind, Srivastava said 24 Indian nationals were kidnapped from Tripura of which six were still untraced. "We have told them to find them out," he said.

Besides the AMM-N Frontier, the Agartala-based Tripura, Cachar and Mizoram Frontier also participated in the meeting.
