Non-government primary school teachers yesterday threatened to continue their work abstention programme for an indefinite period if their jobs were not nationalised by July 10.

"We will shut down our primary schools from July 10 as we did not receive any positive response from the government to our demand despite the work abstention programme for last four days," said the leaders of Bangladesh Nongovernment Primary School Teachers Association in a statement.

They started the work abstention programme at 21 non-government primary schoolsin the capital on July 3.

The association will announce its next course of action at the Central Shaheed Minar on July 24, said the statement.

Earlier last month, the teachers had observed a hunger strike programme for the same demand but failed to get response from the government.

There are about 75,500 teachers in the country's 19,428 nongovernment registered primary schools, according to government statistics.
