The government yesterday held informal talks with the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) in a move to resolve the problems plaguing the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).

The talks took place between Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives

Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and PCJSS President and Chairman of the CHT Regional Council Jyotirindriya Bodhipriya Larma alias Shantu Larma.

Vice-president of the PCJSS Rupayan Dewan was also present at the meeting held at the minister's residence.

Sources said the government is planning to meet some demands of the PCJSS.

The meeting discussed the unrest in the CHT region.

Mannan Bhuiyan told Larma that a meeting of the cabinet committee on the CHT affairs will be convened to discuss the progress of implementation of the CHT peace accord. He also said some new issues will be taken up at that meeting, according to sources.

No date of the cabinet body meet was fixed but it might be held some time this month, a senior official said.

Bhuiyan was also quoted as telling the meeting that the progress of formulation of rules for the CHT Regional Council, separate voter list and activities of the land commission and the taskforce on internal refugees would be discussed.

The cabinet body last met on April 23 with the representatives of the regional council.

The PCJSS wants meeting of its demands by December 31 which include full implementation of the peace accord, removal of CHT Development Board chief Wadud Bhuiyan, withdrawl of army camps from the CHT region and appointment of a full minister to the CHT affairs ministry.

The PCJSS leaders warned of a fresh movement if their demands were not met by the deadline.

Earlier, the PCJSS enforced a road barricade programme and a hartal on December 8 to press for its demands.
