The stalemate at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar exchange appeared over yesterday when the CBA leaders assured the top BTTB management of not pressing for the removal of the general manager, northern region.

The assurance came at a joint meeting of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Telecom) Samity and Bangladesh Telegogajog Sramik Karmachari Union (BTSKU) and the

collective bargaining agent (CBA) of Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB).

The crisis crept in when the employees' union demanded removal of General Manager Mohammad Obaidullah for taking punitive steps against six regular and part-time employees following an official investigation that revealed their corruption. He was barred from entering his office.

The top management of the BTTB arranged the meeting after relations between officers and employees soured.

"The union leaders have decided not to pursue the removal of the general manager of the northern region," BTTB Chairman SATM Badrul Haque told The Daily Star after the meeting yesterday.

"The problem at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar exchange will be resolved through discussion with union leaders on Saturday," said Malek Akhond, member, administration of the BTTB.

Feroz Miah and Abdul Quayyum, president and general secretary of the BTSKU, represented the CBA at the meeting which was also attended by high BTTB officials and other union leaders at the BTTB chairman's office.

"We welcome the decision as we need to work together," Feroj said.
