The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday called off an indefinite strike at Dhaka University after a 'successful' dialogue with the university authorities yesterday, ending a six-day deadlock.

However, the university authorities postponed all examinations scheduled for Saturday considering the convenience of the students, who left residential halls. But classes will resume tomorrow.

"Examinations will be held as per schedule from Sunday," a university press release said.

"We have called off the strike as the authorities paid moral support to our demands and assured that steps would be taken to implement

DU Vice- chancellor SMA Faiz said, "I am happy that the BCL withdrew the strike after a congenial discussion."

The BCL, student front of the main opposition Awami League, enforced the indefinite strike from Saturday protesting the attack on and ouster of its leaders and activists by the ruling BNP's student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on July 31.

The JCD resisted the BCL entrance onto the campus since the first day of the strike. The BCL vowed to continue with the strike until ensuring access of its leaders and activists to the campus.

However, after intervention of the BNP high command, the JCD leaders changed their stance and agreed to sit with the BCLleaders for a dialogue.

Senior leaders of the BCL accompanied by over a hundred activists reached the campus at about 11:00am and gathered at Madhu's Canteen. After about two hours the BCL leaders joined the meeting with the university authorities. Pro- VC Prof AFM Yusuf Haider and Proctor Firoz Ahmed aided the VC in the meeting while the BCL delegates included Marufa Akhter Popy, Balaram Poddar, Rafiqul Islam Kotwal, Delwar Hossain and Hemayet Uddin Himu.
