Group-by-group analysis of the Euro 2004 qualification matches on June 7 and 11:
Group One
Defending champions France have taken a firm grip on top spot up with a maximum 15 points from five games and are turning their attentions to the Confederations Cup.
The battle for second place remains tight with the two main hopefuls meeting on June 7. Slovenia, second on nine points, are away to Israel, third on seven.
Group Two
At the exact halfway stage, four of the five teams involved could all still win the group and the next week throws up some key encounters.
Norway, leading on 10 points, make the short trip to Denmark (second on seven) before hosting Romania (third on six).
Fourth-placed Bosnia, also on six, could further muddy the waters when they visit Romania on Saturday.
Group Three
The Czech Republic and the Netherlands, locked together on 10 points at the top of Group Three, each play once.
The Dutch visit Belarus on Saturday then sit back as the Czechs try to match them at home to Moldova -- four games, four defeats -- four days later.
Third-placed Austria (six points) must win away to Moldova and at home to Belarus to maintain their slim hopes.
Group Four
In a group where Poland, Sweden and Hungary were expected to be fighting it out, Latvia are the surprise pacesetters on 10 points from four games.
Latvia visit third-placed Hungary (five points from four games) on Saturday.
Fourth-placed Sweden (five from three) have a chance to make ground when they visit bottom nation San Marino before hosting second-placed Poland (seven from four) on June 11.
Group Five
On paper it looks tight with Germany, Scotland and Lithuania all on seven points, but in reality the group is Germany's for the taking despite their unimpressive performances in their opening three games.
The 2002 World Cup runners-up were held to a 1-1 home draw by Lithuania last time out after scraping a 2-1 home win over the Faroe Islands but have games in hand on their two rivals.
On Saturday they visit Scotland (played four), coached by Euro 96-winning German boss Berti Vogts, before the away return against the Faroes.
Lithuania (played five) are looking for revenge for a 3-0 defeat when they host Iceland on June 11.
Group Six
As usual, Spain are cruising through qualifying, though they had a scare in their 22 draw against Ukraine in March.
They lead the way with 10 points from four games and will expect to move to 16 with wins at home to Greece on June 7 and away to Northern Ireland on June 11.
Ukraine and Greece both have six points from four games and meet in Greece on June 11. Ukraine will hope to move ahead on June 7 at home to Armenia .
Group Seven
England (10 points) took the initiative with their win over Turkey (nine) in April and will look to remain on course with a home win over Slovakia on June 11.
They warmed up with a low-key 2-1 home win over Serbia and Montenegro in a friendly on Tuesday and will hope the Slovaks can do them a favour on Saturday when they host Turkey.
Slovakia, third on six, could get themselves back in contention by taking some points from the top two.
World Cup semi-finalists Turkey then host Macedonia on June 11.
Group Eight
Another tight group at the halfway stage could become a little clearer.
Leaders Bulgaria (10 points) can tighten their grip with a home win against Belgium(third on six) on Saturday while Croatia (second on seven) face an awkward trip to Estonia (fourth on five) on June 11.
Belgium also play Andorra at home on June 11, four days after the Andorrans' visit to Estonia.
Group Nine
Wales are still dreaming of their first major finals since 1958 but are not in action again until August.
They lead on 12 points from four games while Italy, second with seven points from four, cannot afford a slip on their trip to Finland on June 11.
A second-string Italian team eased to a 2-0 home friendly win over Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
Serbia and Montenegro, who hardly managed a shot in their friendly against England, are still very much in contention with five points from three games -including a 1-1 draw in Italy.
They visit Finland and Azerbaijan in games they must win to keep up the pressure.
Group 10
The biggest twists have come in this group, which remains impossible to predict with all five teams still in the hunt having played four games.
Russia (second on six points) started with two big wins but shock defeats to Albania and Georgia have allowed Switzerland to take over the lead on eight points and the top two meet in Basel on Saturday.
Fourth-placed Ireland have recovered from losing their first two games to get to four points and can make further progress with home games against Albania (third with five points) and Georgia (bottom on four).
Switzerland then host Albania on June 11.
