Water supply to Barisal General Hospital has remained cut off for past 10 days causing immense sufferings to about 150 patients.

The hospital gets water from two pumps placed at the heart of the city. However, both pumps went out of service on May 26 after developing electrical problems.

The pumps could not be reactivated as these were severely damaged, sources said.

The Public Works Department (PWD), when informed, installed an old pump on June 2 that went out of

order after two hours.

No other attempt has since been taken to redress the situation.

"Repeated appeals have been made to the PWD and the matter had even been brought to the notice of the mayor of the Barisal City Corporation," said Dr Mizanur Rahman, residential medical officer.

Yet no action has been taken so far, he added.

The PWD authorities, on the other hand, said they could not replace the pumps unless proper finance was allotted by the higher ups.
