Bangladesh would like the UN to have a central role in Iraq and the hopes and aspirations of Iraqis reflected in any matters of the war-ravaged country despite the Anglo-American plan to divide the country into three sectors, Foreign Secretary Shamser Mobin Chowdhury said yesterday.

"Our position is clear... The UN must have the central role and wishes of the people of Iraq must be taken into consideration. Sovereignty and integrity of Iraq and its oil resources must be controlled by the Iraqis," he said.

Talking to reporters at his office on the latest development in Iraq, he said Bangladesh could join the rebuilding of Iraq under an international arrangement and the UN.

Asked about the disagreement of the global powers on the issue, he said, "It's a very complex and evolving situation... It's an unusual scene. It will take time for the situation to crystallise."

"There is a strong feeling that UN should play the role in dealing with Iraq. Let there be an international consensus. Short of global consensus, lasting peace in the Middle East may not come."

He replied in the negative when asked if Bangladesh has been asked to send troops to the post-war Iraq and work for stabilisation under the coalition forces.

Asked if Bangladesh would suffer directly or indirectly because of her anti-war stand, he said Bangladesh's policy is guided by international law, UN role and

strategic national interest.

About the recently announced roadmap to resolve Palestine-Israel conflicts, Chowdhury said, " We're watching it. We have already welcomed the appointment of the new prime minister of Palestine."

Reiterating Bangladesh's position, he said there has to be an independent and sovereign Palestine State with Al-Quds as its capital. This is the only way of bringing a lasting peace there, he added.

About the recent India-Pakistan initiatives to resolve their conflicts through dialogue, he said, "We are hopeful of it. This will have a positive impact on SAARC."

The foreign secretary leaves tomorrow for a weeklong visit to Norway and Sweden to discuss bilateral matters with his counterparts. He is expected to return next week.
