The Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association (FBUTA) yesterday demanded termination of politically motivated appointments at universities.

The FBUTA leaders blamed the authorities for their 'discriminatory attitude' towards appointment and promotion of university teachers and officials.

They also called for appointment of competent candidates in line with recruitment guidelines. The demand came at an executive committee meeting of the FBUTA at the Dhaka University Teachers' Club, with Professor Habibur Rahman, FBUTA president, in the chair.

A 12-point resolution drafted at the meeting demanded that new teachers should be recruited to the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.

The shortage of teachers has been hampering academic activities of the university for one and a half years, said the resolution.

The resolution also criticised the government for harassing university teachers like Professor Muntasir Mamun.
