About six lakh Bangladeshi workers languishing in the Malaysian detention camps as illegal immigrants, could not avail, themselves of the general amnesty to return home due to lack of government initiatives.

The Malaysian government declared general amnesty to illegal immigrants last week asking them to go back to their own countries on some conditions.

Highlighting the issue, SHISUK, (Shikha Shastha Unnayan Karzakram), an NGO working on migrants workers, yesterday said the Bangladeshi workers, detained in the Malaysian camps or working in loss-making mills/factories without payment or irregular payment, could not take the opportunity because of their inability to buy air tickets.

SHISUK demanded immediate action by the government to arrange the return of the workers through Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia.
