Boosted by a five-wicket haul from leg-spinner Orlanzo Jackson, the Windward Islands gained the ascendancy over Bangladesh A on the opening day of their sixth-round Busta Cup Series match at Arnos Vale on Friday.

At the close, the sixth place Windwards, who dismissed the Bangladesh second-string team for a modest 163 with Jackson capturing five for 66 off 28 overs, were 37 without loss.

Young opener Devon Smith was unbeaten on 30, having already struck four boundaries while his partner Kirsten Casimir was on five.

Opener Ehsanul Haque batted with grit and determination to topscore for Bangladesh with a patient 50, which included just three fours in 205 minutes off 168 balls.

Middle-order batsman Tushar Imran emerged from a series of low scores, to hit an attacking 46, laced with five fours off 76 balls while the only other double-digit contributions came from opener Hannan Sarkar and leg-spinner Mosaddek Hossain.

Young left-arm swing bowler Kenroy Peters supported with two for 18 off 11.1 overs while Deighton

Butler took the key wicket of Ehsanul and also effected two run outs to get rid of all-rounder Mushfiqur Rahman and fast bowler Anwar Monir without scoring.

Bangladesh A, who were sent in to bat, had made a promising start but declined from 56 for one at lunch to 139 for six at tea as Jackson spun a web around the batsmen, removing Mazharul Haque, Naimur Rahman and captain Akram Khan to seize the initiative for the Windwards.

Jackson added the wicket of wicketkeeper Anwar Hossain, who made just one as the Windwards made an excellent start toward their bid of gaining a victory which would keep alive their hopes of reaching the Busta International Shield semifinals.
