Only one neurologist is available for every' 33.(111.000 patients and nearly 2.50.000 patients are admitted to different hospitals with neuro-complications in the country' every' year, specialists said at a seminar yesterday.

Some 34 doctors are serving as neuro-medicine experts while only 40 doctors are working in various hospitals as neurosurgeons, they added.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sheikh Fazkil Karim Selim inaugurated the seminar at a city' hotel.

Bangladesh Society of Neurologists organised the seminar marking its first national conference. Society' Convenor Prof MA Mannan chaired the inaugural

session.

State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr M Amanullah. Acting Health Secretary Mohammad Monir'Tr.aman, Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU Prof Mahmood Hasan. National Professor Nurul Islam, Acting Director General of Health Services Prof Shah Munir Hossain and Prof Deen Mohammad of Dhaka Medical College also spoke at the function.

The Health Minister said the government would establish a neuroscience institute soon to provide medicare to the growing number of patients.

He said population boom and frequent road accidents are largely responsible for the rising number of patients with neurocomplications.
