The Law Ministry has appointed new Public Prosecutors to conduct the Jalal Murder Case, removing the Public Prosecutor Mohammad Kamrul Islam following a High Court directive on Sunday.

In a letter to the District Magistrate of Dhaka Mohammad Abdur Razzak, on January 31, Solicitor of the Law Ministry said the government has appointed Shah Alam and Abdur Rashid Miah (Badsha) as additional PP and APP respectively at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court in place of Kamrul Islam.

Kamrul Islam had endorsed a report by the police to inform the court that the complainant, the son of Jalal, was not traceable. He had also told Jalal's wife that he did not have time to run the case as he was busy in other cases. When The Daily Star published a story on January 11, negating his claim after tracing the family in three hours, a Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justice Ali Asgar Khan and Justice S K Sinha issued a suo moto rule on January 14, asking the government to show cause why the PP should not be removed from the case. They disposed of the rule on January 28, directing the government to remove him from the case.

Jalal, a microbus driver who worked as a source of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, was tortured to death and his body was found in the overhead water tank of the DB office on March 25, 1999.

An Inspector of DB and three other plainclothes and canteen manager were charged with the murder.
