KUSHTIA. Nov 10: Flood victims cannot rebuild their houses due to acute scarcity of construction materials in the district, reports UNB.

Construction materials like bamboo, straw and jute-stick have become dear in the village markets.

The devastating flood causing substantial losses to them damaged most of the houses of the poor people.

At present, reconstruction of houses has become a prime need of the villagers but due to acute crisis and price hike of bamboo and other house building materials the poor people cannot undertake the reconstruction

works.

In a bid gain to windfall profit, some unscrupulous traders bringing the items from distant places arc selling those at exorbitant prices.

Poor people who do not have ability to purchase house-building materials at the high rale are now in need of financial help from government or non-government organizations to reconstruct their ravaged houses.

Some one lakh people of the district out of 15 lakh were affected by the recent flood.

According to an estimate one lakh kutcha houses have been damaged either partially or totally in the devastating flood. Those who

have lost their houses completely are still living under open sky or In temporary centres.

Over one lakh people are passing their days in open space as post flood rehabilitation programmes is yet to be started in the districts.

Some 2.463 homeless poor people in Sadar. 2,175 in Kumarkhali, 12,242 in Khoksa. 4,700 in Mirpur, 1,885 in Bheramara and 2,392 In Daulatpur upazilas fire in need of money to rebuild their damaged houses.

The affected people urged the concerned authority to take immediate steps to rehabilitate them.
