A group of seven young Z-A sculptors held a week-long A. AexhtbiUon of (heir recent works at the Zainul gallery that came to end on October 7 .2000.

Compared to other forms of art sculpture is a neglected genre In Bangladesh. Sculptors hardly have a patron or a buyer to their work.

But still there is a flicker of hope lies in the fact that a significant and meaningful shift has taken place after the claustrophobic time of the 60s and 70s when sculptors were stigmatized and virtually outcast. Novera. the woman sculptor, had to seek self exile in Paris to avoid social repression and reactionary social milieu of the 60s.

In the contemporary art world sculpture Is a vibrant art form. Unlike other art forms sculpture can be three dimensional and can give a sense of direct sensual contact with the subject of the art.

The works put on display, show the artists ability to breathe life into the inanimate objects and turn them into art.

The works displayed on the show are done in papier-mache, wood, and metal. The participants of the exhibition ----Naslma Haque Mitu. Maynnl Islam Itani. Mahbubur Rahman. Farzana Islam Milky, Md. Mahbubul Huque, Kabir Ahmed Masum Chlstl and Imran Hossain—who have either done their B.F.A or M.F.A from Institute of Fine Arts, assembled their pieces together to offer the viewers visualize their expressions of different feelings about life and experiences derived from there.

Right at the entrance of the gallery . Imran’s Sunagorlk (good citizen) 1&2 done in papier-mache. are semi realistic in style. In these works, two deformed gluttonous human figures are seen engaged in devouring shamelessly. Although the title of the series Is Good Citizen, there Is a tone of satire in them. How our resjionsible citizens are gulping the country's resources. Visual deformity of the figures is suggestive of the sick people around us.

Pual has done a series on Kathopokathon (conversation) in wood that appears to lx? too obscure to understand easily. "They depict conversation with one’s own self ", explained Paul, while talking about his works. Mahbub's works have lieen titled as T;il Patar Sepal —a sepoy without gun, in wood that show the essential hollowness of man. C h 1 s t I ' s Prob hat Bondona(mornlng prayer) in metal, with its solemn meditative mood, evokes a sublime feeling among the viewers.

The show has been successful in drawing a wide range of visitors.
