NEW YORK Sept 8 (AFP): Martina Hingis Is ready to dispatch Venns -the one Williams remaining in the 15-mlllion-dollar U.S. Open.

The Swiss top seed has been gunning for a serious revenge win after running up a losing record in their series since winning a semifinal here against the American a year ago.

In the interim. Williams won the Wimbledon title, joining her sister Serena as a Grand Slam champion, and is currently riding a 24-match winning streak with four straight titles.

But Hingis has her own plans when they play a semifinal on Friday, "i fee i'llke I have a pretty good chance. I'm playing well.” Hingis said. "Venus has won four tournaments, so maybe she's a little more favoured."

Unlike Williams, the Hingis strength is not her big-hitting, but her big-time thinking and

strategy. And she has her calculating eye on Williams after compiling a 9-6 career record against the 20-year-old.

Hingis has a small problem to overcome, having lost three of four matches against her rival since the Open semi of a year ago.

Hingis is quietly aching for a sixth Grand Slam title after claiming her last one 20 months ago at the Australian Open. "You have to take your chance whenever you can." Hingis said of playing either of the Williams sisters.

Williams Is the fitter sister after the withdrawal of her sibling from their doubles seiui-final Thursday due to an inflamed bone in her foot.

The 20-year-old Williams followed up Wimbledon with two titles in California and one in New Haven last month. "I've been winning quite a few. In the big points, in the big situations. I'm at an advantage." she said.

She takes Grand Slam confidence into the match-up. 1

Lindsay Davenport is confident of her chances against Russian teenager Elena Dementieva after knocking out Serena in straight sets Wednesday night.

That victory turned around a run of five consecutive defeats, Davenport said she and Williams may have formed an alliance to thwart the Williams offfensire.

Davenjiort said she has,yet to consider her |x>ssibilitie^ against surprise semifinalist Dementieva, but knows what she must do after four straight wins in their series.

Davenport lias dropped only one set so far during the forti night and has spent only five hours and a bit on court.
