SIRAJGANJ. Aug 7: Two breaches have been developed on Sunday morning at two points of the Brahmaputra embankment due to Intense pressure of current of the River Jamuna.

The breaches occurred at a point situated at Meghal under Kazlpur upazila and at another point at Shlmla under the Sadar upazlla, according to Water Development Board (WDB) sources.

However, temporarily the situaUon has been brought under control by dumping cement concrete blocks and sand bags by the WDB authorities.

Panic has gripped among the people apprehending greater disaster due to total collapse of the embankment.

WDB sources Informed that the River Jamuna swelled further and crossed the danger mark. The river has been flowing 29 centimetres above the danger mark as on Sunday evening.

A vast tract of land and many hous- > vf five upazilas namely Kazlpur, Sirajganj Sadar. Bclkuchl, Chowhali and Shahjadpur inundated about one lakh people have been marooned and two lakh people have been affected due to worsening flood situation. Many affected people took shelter on WDB embankment and safer high places.

Executive Engineer of WDB told The Daily Star that they had been trying their best to save the embankment from further damage. They have been keeping round the clock watch over the situation.
