Steps would be taken to build a permanent truck terminal at Tejgaon. Water Resources Minister Abdur Razzak said on Wednesday.

At present several thousand trucks are parked on the roadside in Tejgaon area under a temporary arrangement.

Addressing as the chief guest a workers rally to mark the May Day. the Minister said that steps would also be taken to ensure safety of the transport workers on the highway.

The rally was organised by the Bangladesh Truck Drivers Union (BTDU) at Tejgaon truck stand.

The minister called upon all to resist toll collectors and terrorism in the transport sector.

BTDU leaders urged the authorities concerned to immediately arrest and punish the killers of truck driver Abdul Hanif who was doused with petrol and set ablaze at Hemayetpur in Savar for defying an 'illegal hartal' on April 16. General Secretary of BTDU. Roy Ramesh Chandra, has also appealed to the authorities to help the family of Hanif.

BTDU leaders also termed the hartal call for May 16 by the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation 'illegal'.

Roy thanked the International Transport Workers for their contribution towards the families of three drivers who were killed by pro-hartal ac-tivlsts last year.

Others who addressed the rally Included Ladu Mia Monlrul Islam and AbdUr Rahman.
