CHITTAGONG. Apr 3: Security has been tightened in and around the port city ahead of tomorrow's Joint public meeting of the four-party Opposition Alliance.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. Jatiya Party Chairman H M Ershad. Jamaat-e-Islaml Ameer Golam Azam and Islam! Oikkya Jote chief Moulana Az-Izul Haq will address the meeting at the Outer Stadium

Six check-posts have been set up at the entry points of the

city to search vehicles and to avert any untoward Incident centering tomorrow's rally, police sources said.

Besides, a large number of police and BDR will be deployed around the meeting venue, which is near BNP city office, sources said.

Meanwhile, the port city today witnessed a massive campaigning by opposition activists In support of tomorrow's rally. A series of processions were also brought out in the evening.

Preparations have been made for arrival of opposition supporters at the meeting from Chittagong Hill Tracts. Cox's Bazar and other areas, sources In the parties said. They are expecting huge crowds from far flung areas.

Unconfirmed reports said, about Tk 10 lakh is being spent for the public meeting.

A special squad of volunteers has been formed to ring the dias during the rally to check entry of any unwanted person, the sources said.

Ershad arrived here this evening from Dhaka by road while Khaleda Zia. Golam Azam and Moulana Azlzul Hoq will arrive by Biman flights tomorrow. They are expected to return to the capital the same day. the sources said.

The public meeting will be started at 2 pm.

BSS adds from Chittagong: Tomorrow's joint meeting will be first occasion for the four opposition leaders to appear on one platform outside the capital.

Earlier, the four leaders addressed a joint public meeting at Paltan Maidan in Dhaka on February 13 last for the first time to boost the BNP-led opposition movement against the government.

President of city BNP and convenor of the All-Party Action Committee Meer Nasir along with other members of the committee is busy giving final touches to the preparations for peacefully holding the Joint public meeting. The committee met a number of times to review the preparations.

At the meeting. Begum Zia may announce a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal on April 6 or 9 to press the opposition demand for resignation of the government and hand-over of power to a caretaker administration to pave way for general elections. Alliance sources said.

She is also scheduled to announce programmes for Joint public meetings at Sylhet, Khulna. Rajshahi and Barisal. the sources said.
