SATKHIRA. Mar 2 At least six people Including three ex aminees and a female teacher were killed and more than 25 injured in a stampede at a SSC examination sub-centre in Kalaroa thana today.

The stampede occurred when the collapsible gate on the ground floor of the Kalaroa Government College, the subcentre. was opened about a half an hour before the first examination started at 10 a.m.

More than 900 students as

well as hundreds of people tried to enter the centre oy the lone narrow staircase.

The situation deteriorated when police charged into the building to restore order and some youths molested female students and women, witnesses said.

Later, an angry mob attacked government offices in Kalaroa. damaged motor vehicles, exploded crackers, threw stones at the thana complex throughout the day. They also demanded

immediate withdrawal of the Thana Nir buhl Officer

BDR and reserve police were deployed to Kalaroa tn the afternoon.

The dead are Shamsunnahar Llpl. 16 Asadullah. 17. Ka-shem. 16. all examinees: Fazila Khatun. 30. a teacher of Juglkhall Momtaz Ahmed High School: Mamunut Rahman. 22. a BA student of Kalaroa Government College: and Hablbur Rahman, an HSC student of Sheikh Amanullah College.

The injured were admitted to hospitals in Satkhira and Khulna.

Shamsunnahar Llpi and Asadullah were students of Ho-tatganj High School. It could not be known which school Kashem was from.

The district administration has formed a one-member committee comprising an additional district magistrate to probe the incident .

About 983 examinees were to sit lot itir examination al the sub • 'litre yesterday.

Things became worse when some youtlis started molesting the female examinees and other women taking advantage of the situation Hundreds of panic stricken people then rushed downstairs to get out of the building but by this lime police locked the only gate.

Shamsunnahar LipL Asa-dullah and Kashern. the examinees and Fazila Khatun. the teacher, died on the spot while Mamunur Rahman, and Habibur Rahman died on way to hospital.

The rnob confined Ras nd-din, the TNO. to the thana health complex for about live hours following ’he Incident. The DC of Satknira along with Additional IG of Khulna range rescued the TNO at about 5 p.rn. yesterday.

People of Kalaroa brought out processions and held a rally where the demanded with drawal of the TNO. They threatened to paralyse life In Kalaroa if their demand was not met by this evening.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Teachers' Association. Kalaroa chapter, has decided not to function during the examinations from Saturday until their security aspect is taken care of.
