UNITED NATIONS. Feb 1: UN and Indonesian human rights investigators blame Jakarta's military chiefs for last year's terror campaign In East Timor — and Indonesia's president says former army commander Gen. Wiranto must now resign at once, reports AP.

Abdurrahman Wahid, Indonesia's first democratically elected head of state in four decades, told a news conference in Davos. Switzerland that he will, demand Wiranto's resignation "because he Is implicated' by the reports."

The general should then "be examined by an internet court," not an International tribunal, which UN investigators concluded Monday would be the best way to achieve justice for the people of East Timor.

Wiranto headed the Indonesian military during a rampage following a UN-organised refer endum on August 30 In which the people of East Timor voted overwhelmingly to separate from Indonesia and become independent. The army's special forces command, known as Kopassus, actively recruited, funded and supported the militias, and in some cases Indonesian' army personnel and local Indonesian police were directly Involved In Ihe attacks, the report said.

The five UN Investigators called for the United Nations to establish "an international human rights tribunal" to prosecute those responsible.

President Wahid's call for Wiranto's resignation and Indonesian Attorney General IV-r . Darusman's an-nouncen -nt that state prosecutors would Investigate allegations in the Indonesian commission's report demonstrated that the government was taking the charges seriously.

The UN Security Council established international tribunals to prosecute war crimes in Rwanda and former Yugoslavia but hasn't indicated whether it would seek a tribunal for East Timor.
