This was stated by the visiting Director General of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). a unified organisation of OECF and Japan EXIM Bank. Keichi Tango, when he called on Industries Minister Tofall Ahmed at his official residence in Dhaka yesterday.

Tango said Bangladesh is now Identified as a prospective country and Japan loves to extend its support to expedite the development .spree. He said JBIC will provide financial assistance for the augmentation and BMRE of Chittagong. Fenchuganj and Qhorashal urea fertiliser factories.

Besides, he said fund will be available to set up one Dl-ammonium phosphate plant in Chittagong and urea factories In other areas. He said the governor of JBIC will visit Bangladesh sometime later this year to finalise the projects.

Tango said it will be convenient to settle the Issues relating to KAFCO. including financial restructuring and handing over the factory before the visit of the government of JBIC.

Paying thanks and gratitude for the generous assistance of Japan to the overall development activities of Bangladesh since independence, the minister said. "Japan is our potential development partner. ftHe also thanked the Japanese government for providing financial assistance for the overall improvement of fertiliser factories.. He said- the government is planning to set up more urea factories in the northern and southern regions of the country as the country has sufficient gas reserve. He said the annual growth in urea consumption is six to eight per cent. "We also want to produce value-added products of methane for export.' ne added seeking Japanese help to set up these fertiliser factories.

Regarding KAFCO. the minister said IFC recently submitted the report on KAFCO's financial restructuring which is under active consideration of all shareholders. He said after completing the technical audit, the machinery will be replaced to make it economically viable.

He said that the whole process would be completed by August. Tofall told the JBIC DG that the present government from the very beginning was sincerely trying to resolve the long-outstanding KAFCO issue.

Urging for more Japanese investment In Bangladesh, the minister said. "We have a very liberal investment policy and are offering very attractive packages to foreign Investors.’ He said. We have created a conducive environment for investment and the Japanese investors could earn maximum dividend from their investments."
