World War 1. quantum me chanics. women’s suffrage, non-violent non-cooperation, penicillin, fascism and World war II. atomic bomb, television, computer, communism and cold war. democracy, laser, pill and women’s movement, space exploration, personal computer and Internet. Notice that most of the major inventions have, been made, and the movements led. by Americans. While the nineteenth century had be longed to Britain and France, without a doubt the twentieth has been America s Century.</lang>

Eastman commercialised his Kodak camera in 1888 and by the 1920s had a monopoly on the photographic Industry. Modern life without still and movie cameras is unimagin able. Al the turn of the century, summers in New York State could be oppressively hot. This was not to the liking of a native New Yorker. Willis Haviland Carrier. In 1902. Carrier de signed the first system to control temperature and humidity. Carrier's invention, air conditioner. has cooled countless bodies and minds over this century’.</lang>

Edison had a bed in his lab. slept very little (four hours), survived mostly on coffee and cakes and lived by his own creed, “genius is one per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration." The first radio was marketed in 1916. In 1921 the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) demonstrated the market potential of radio by broadcasting the Dempsey-Carpentier world heavyweight boxing bout. Within three years RCA sold radio sets worth 80 million dollars. Replacement of the vacuum lubes by transistor in the 1950s allowed miniaturisation and sound quality enhancement of the receivers. Before the advent of television pictures, radio sounds kept the people of the world in tom h.</lang>

Quantum mechanics states that atoms and molecules can take only discrete, not continuous energy levels. This is a concept that even Ebstein had problem with in the beginning. A laser light is nothing but an intense, stimulated transition between two such discrete energy levels.</lang>

When the men came back after the war. they began reproducing lustily like no other time in American history, giving birth to the "Baby Boom Generation." Two all-time favourite movies were released in 1939: Civil War classic Gone With the Wind, and Lewis Carroll’s fantasy Wizard ofOz.</lang>

Einstein left his native land and joined the Institute of Advanced Studies, in Princeton in 1933. and became a US citizen in 1940..In 1939 at the urging of Leo Szilard and Nobelist Eugene Wigner, two eminent physicists who had also left their native Hungary, and Italian migrant. Nobelist Enrico Fermi. Einstein appealed to President Franklin Roosevelt to allow American scientists to build a nuclear device before the Germans, who were working on it. did. This resulted in the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb. Only six weeks after the bomb, utilising nuclear fission to release enormous energy, was successfully tested in New Mexico. it was dropped on Hiroshima. Japan to hasten the end of the war on the Japanese front. Upon witnessing the horrors oi Hiroshima and Nagasaki; Einstein. Fermi. Robert Oppenheimer and several other prominent scientists associated with the Manhattan Project regretted their association with the bomb. Nuking of Japan remains one of America’s major sins of the century.</lang>

In 1928 Scot Sir Alexander Fleming extracted the first antibiotic - which he called penicillin - from a mould. The 1944 film Double Indemnity was the late Satyajit Ray's favourite film. However. Orson Welles's tale of a newspaper publisher. Citizen Kane (1941), is considered the greatest movie of the twentieth century.</lang>

In 1926 John L. Baird of England demonstrated a true television system by electrically transmitting moving pictures. However, it was al the Radio Corporation of America (RCA). Princeton that modern television was Invented. Spearheaded by Vladlmln Zworykir. the first all-electronic television used a camera called the ionoscopc and a cathode ray tube receiver. Television pictures made the world a global village; now people could not only hear, but also see what was going on in the rest of the world. Sputnik, into space alarming America, and bringing on the space race. David Lean's A Bridge on the River Kwai. released in 1957. remains the best war movie ever made.</lang>
