Two killed in separate incidents

LAXM1PUR. Dec 31: Two people were killed in separate Incidents in the district on Monday, reports UNB.

Sources said Nurun Nahar. 9, a student of class 11. was crushed under the wheel of a bus on Laxmlpur-Chowmuhani road at Muktiganj Bazaar at 9:30 am. She was crossing the road. In another incident. Numabi, 35. a brick field labourer, was allegedly killed by his employer in Joksin area of Sadar thana around noon It was alleged that the brick field owner and his manager killed Numabi In a planned way. NATORE, Dec 31: Aman procurement drive could not be started yet anywhere in the district during the current season for lack of storage facilities, reports UNB.

Official sources said the eight food godowns In the district have a storage capacity of 7,000 metric tons. But these already have 5,000 tons of rice and wheat in stock. Though there is only space for 2,000 tons, the office of the District Controller of Food fixed a target of procuring 1.562 tons paddy and 4,185 tons rice in the current season to give price support to the farmers. The government earlier fixed the procurement price for paddy and rice at Tk 8 and Tk 12.50 per kg respectively. After achieving a bumper production, the Aman growers were in festive mood but they are now frustrated with the low market price of paddy. A grower Informed that the average estimateri production cost per maund of paddy stood at Tk 280 while it is selling in different markets of the district at between Tk 250 and Tk 270.

Alleged looting by forest guards

BARGUNA. Dec 31: Forest guards have allegedly looted fishes, cash and other belongings worth Tk 5 lakh from five fishing trawlers in the Bay of Bengal, reports UNB.

Patnarghata Trawler Owners’ Association alleged that the forest guards of Dublarchar and Baiyampara beats attacked the trawlers late at night on December 25. Two fishermen. Anwar and Jalil, thrown overboard by the attackers, were rescued by another trawler after two days. The Association said the fishermen now fear to go out to the Bay for fishing apprehending the attack by pirates and forest guards.

Computer training

MEHERPUR. Dec 31: A four-month computer training course under the auspices of the district Youth Development Department was inaugurated here in its office premises recently by deputy commissioner of Meherpur Mohammad Kamrul Islam, reports BSS.

According to sources, a total of 40 youths both males and females were talcing part in the training course.

575 tons of wheat allotted

MEHERPUR. Dec 31: A total of 575 tones of wheat has been allotted against 225 projects in two thanas of the district in the current season, reports BSS.

The projects have been taken up under Test Relief Programme. According to Meherpur District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources, the thanawise allotment of wheat and projects are: Sadar — 275 tons of wheat against 105 projects and Gangni — 300 tons of wheat against 120 projects.

Five injured in clash

MUNSHIGANJ, Dec 31: One Ward Commissioner of Munshi-ganj Pourasabha and four others were seriously injured in a clash between two groups of people in the town on December 27. reports BSS

According to official sources, the clash occurred at South Is-lampur in the town. The injured were identified as Pourasabha Commissioner Shahidul Islam 36. Zakir, 30, Setara Begum, 30.
