The Dhaka University authorities yesterday expelled five students for various terms and decided to continue ‘temporary expulsion’ of seven others for involvement in various criminal activiUes on the campus.

Two of those expelled were also declared persona non grata on the campus.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Disciplinary Board of DU with Vice Chancellor Prof AK Azad Chowdhury in the chair. Deans of faculties. Syndicate members, provosts of halls. Proctor and Controller of Examinations attended the meeting, according to a DU

press release.

The meeting reviewed the reports of three probe committees formed earlier to investigate three separate incidents on the campus and took the decisions.

Three students were ’temporarily expelled' yesterday for their involvement in the kidnapping of two youths to Mohsin Hall on September 14 this year. Charges of giving shelter to outsiders involved in the kidnapping were also proved in primary investigation. the meeting said.

The three students are: Md Idris Hossain Khan Asif., third year BSS (Honours) in Political Science; Md Abul Kashem Chowdhury Shishir. second year (Honours) in Political Science. and Ishtiaq Ahmed Shimul, BBA (Marketing) seventh semester. An outsider, Su-jan, and his accomplices were 'directly involved' in the kidnapping.

The authorities also decided to serve notices asking the three to show cause within 15 days why they should not be expelled for good.

Besides, police were asked to nab the gang led by Sujan.

Two students were expelled for two years and also declared persona non grata on the campus for their involvement in a shootout at Sir AF Rahman Hall on July 16 this year. They are: Md Nurul Islam Khan Es-han. first year (old) BSS (Honours) in International Relations and Mohiuddin Ahmed Murad, first year (old) BSS (Honours) in Political Science.

The authorities asked police to immediately arrest an outsider identified as Niamul Islam Dablu. who was Involved in the shooting incident.

The authorities also decided to keep the earlier expulsion orders, served on seven other students, in effect for an unspecified period. The seven students were earlier expelled temporarily for their involvement in an attack on an M.Phil researcher on the campus. They had attacked Munshi Mohammad Selim with machete while he was sleeping in his room at Suyasen Hall on April 14 this year.

The seven students are -

ABM Zakir Hossain, third year (Economics). Shahidul Islam, third year (Islamic Studies). Jamaluddin. third year (Sociology). Khizir Hayat Tipu. third year. (Sociology). Mehedi Hasan. thira year (Management). Noman (Islamic History and Culture) and Khokon (Islamic Studies).

Notices will also be served asking them to show cause why the temporary expulsion would not be declared expulsion for good.

The Vice Chancellor could not be contacted till late last night for comment.

However. Proctor of the university Prof Nuruniiabi told The Daily Star that the law enforcing agencies could arrest those students involved in criminal activities.

He also said that there were case filed against seven students. who were earlier expelled temporarily. Police should arrest them.

But the Proctor could not confirm whether cases were filed against the five who were expelled yesterday.
