Brian Lara scored his 13th one-day century as West Indies clinched the two-match limited-overs series 2-0 with a 109-run whipping of Bangladesh in the second match at the Banga-bandhu National Stadium last night.

Lara, the left-hander from Trinidad, considered one of the greatest batsmen of all times, scored a quickfire 117 runs off only 62 balls to inspire his side to a mouthful 314 for six in 50 overs after he won the toss and decided to bat.

In reply. Bangladesh were all out for 205 in the face of some controlled bowling by the Caribbean.

Lara, who began the innings along with Sherwin Campbell, gave a Hying start to the West Indies innings. The southpaw massacred the Bangladesh new-ball bowlers as West Indies reached their 50 in the sixth over facing only 33 balls.

Lara reached his fifty in the eighth over playing only 26 balls that saw a dozen boundaries. He took another 19 balls to reach the three figures with another six fours and three over-boundaries.

The West Indies captain's marauding maul came to an end in the 20th over when he dragged down a Hablbu) Bashar off-spinner on to his own stumps when he was on 117.

After adding 98 runs for the first wicket along with Campbell (28). Lara partnered hard-hitter Ricardo Powell (21) to add another 63 runs before the latter was caught by Enamul Hoque at long-on while trying to drive all-rounder Khaled Mahmud in the 16th over.

Lara then added 24 runs with Hinds before being spun out. His 45-ball century was the second quickest hundred In the history of GDI. Pakistani opener Shahid Afridi holds the world record of a 37-ball century. Besides. on his way to 117. Lara became the fourth West Indian to reach the 6000-rnark in one-day cricket after Viv Richards.

After Lara s departure, with West Indies firmly poised on 185 for 3 in the 20th over, Bangladesh bowlers made a brilliant comeback restricting their opponents to add only 129 runs in the remaining 30 overs.

However, it was in-form Shivnarine Chanderpaul. who came up with his second sue vessive fifty to help his side cross the 300-mark at the end.

Chanderpaul. the Guyanese batter, who was undefeated on 92 in the first match on Friday, began from where he left and scored yet another unbeaten knock of 77 off 86 balls.

It was a bad day for the Bangladeshi bowlers. Two new-ball bowlers Monjurul Islam and Shafiuddin Ahmed conceded 38 and 32 runs from four and three overs respectively. Vice-captain Khaled Mahmud gave away 78 runs in his eight overs. However, it was Habibul Bashar, who came out as the day's most economic bowler with the analysis of 10 0-30-1

This was the third highest total against Bangladesh in one-day cricket and the fourth 300-plus Innings in their 37 GDI appearances.

New Zealand scored 336 against Bangladesh in the Australasia Cup in Sharjah in 1990. while Pakistan managed 319 for 5 in the Asia Cup in Colombo in 1997 Zimbabwe scored 312 against Bangladesh in a tri-nation meet in Kenya in 1997.

Replying. Bangladesh struggled throughout their innings before they were bundled out for 205 in the List over Skipper Aminui Islam, who was out for a duck in the first match, topscored with an unbeaten 66 off 89 balls, followed by opener Shahriar Hossain who chipped in with 47.

Shahriar could have easily reached hfs fifty had he not left his crease to nilss a wide delivery from occasional bowler Sherwin Campbell, only to ai low wicketkeeper Jacobs to re-tnovc his stumps

Campbell, who never got a single wicket in the previous 60 appearances in the Instant version ol cricket, had something to cherish as he finished the day with 4 for 30 from his 10-over spelt. Off-spinner Nehemiah Ferry and skipper Brian Lara evenly shareri four wickets, while McLean and ■ Dillon captured one wicket each

For his scintillating 117 and two wickets for 12. Lara was later adjudged man-of-the-match.
