Problems grip 260 schools

From Our Correspondent NETRAKONA, SepfCAjotal of 260 non-government schools in 10 thanas here are beset with manifold problems hampering education of about 25 lakh students.

Official sources said, deplorable condition of school building, shortage of teachers, furniture and accommodation including absence of necessary fund are hindering the academic activities of these schools. Classes are being held in many schools in dilapidated buildings, which may collapse at any time. Fifty per cent of the school buildings are tin-shed ones. Guardians urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to improve the condition of non-government schools.

Poor Aman output expected

Aman yield may be poor this year in this district.

About 70 per cent farmers did not use important soil nutrients like TSP and MP fertiliser due to continuous rainfall. according an agricultural information report prepared by a multinational company. A field survey conducted last month revealed that farmers prepared their seed beds 15 to 20 days ahead of usual time as monsoon set earlier. The early monsoon rain enabled the farmers just to plough the land and transplant the paddy.

Farmers are now using urea. TSP and MP fertiliser as top dressing. This has made the plants susceptible to pest attack. according to experts.

Unabated smuggling of gold

Gold is being smuggled out unabated to India.

Smuggling of gold has been increasing in recent days. On the other hand contrabands which are coming into the country are being paid in exchange of gold. There are over 200 jewellery shops here. The smugglers have their own jewellery shop where they stock gold. They also keep it in possession of someone who pass out gold to India by their henchmen or by faithful agents in an attractive commission.

Child home in bad shape

Alleged irregularities and mismanagement in the government-run child home here have been causing immense sufferings to the inmates and hampering their education.

The home housed in a flood shelter in Palla area. 3 kilometres from the district town, is in a pitiably condition. The rooms of the home have no furniture, except a bed on which four inmates have to sleep. Doors and windows are mostly broken and some of those are covered with bamboo slips.

The orphans alleged that they were served with low quality food violating the standard menu.
