JAMALPUR. July 6: Fanners here are expecting a bumper production of guava due to favourable climatic condition.

About 500 families covering 25 villages including all the seven police stations have been engaged in cultivation of guava for many years. The villages are Kutamoni. Kalabati, Mollah Para. Binander Para. Kuchgar. Kachasora. Beltia, Pingalhati. Bela Pingalhati, Shitalkursa. Godashimla, Ranarampur, Shahbajpur, Rashidpur, Sri-rampur, Titpallah and Naraon-pur of the sadar thana.

Kazi, Kuriana’ and local (Deshi) varieties are familiar names for guava lovers. The guavas here are of best quality.

Jahangir Alam, a villager of Kutamoni of Kendua union of the sadar thana has planted 450 saplings of Kazi and Kuriana varieties of guava. Now he is getting yield from the grown up trees. '

The cultivators of guava told this correspondent that about 10 lakh tons of guava are produced in the areas every year.

But a bulk of these guavas are damaged here every year due to absence of storage facilities. They added that the size and

taste of guava produced in the aforementioned villages are totally different from those of other parts of the country.

The farmers said, the flower-

ing and budding of guava trees of these areas are showing signs of bumper production if weather favours.

‘ that the production of guava was hampered serloulsy last year due to the-devastating flood and pest-attack. As a result they incurred huge losses.
