Woman UP member chopped

FARIDPUR. June 5 : A woman member of Ambikapur Union Parishad (UP) in the sadar thana was chopped recently.

A gang of miscreants numbering five to six forcibly entered into the house of the victim, Halima Begum. 48. at village Shuvarampur at dead of night . They chopped her indiscriminately injuring her critically. She was first admitted to Faridpur General Hospital. From there she was referred to Dhaka. Previous enmity is the reason behind the incident.

Attack on Rjy shahi Edn Board team

GAIBANDHA. June 5 : A vigilance team of Raishahi Education Board was attacked by the agitated HSC candidates at Gaibandha Government College centre recently.

According to eye witnesses, on that day the examinations of Islamic History and Chemistry second paper were about to end and the warning bell was rang. At that time a six-member vigilance team, all on a sudden, entered into one room of the academic building of the centre. The members took away eight scripts from the candidates and asked the hall invigilator to expell them. Meanwhile, the last bell of examination was rang up. All the guardians and supporters of candidates rushed to the examination hall. Then angry supporters and candidates attacked the members and assaulted them.

Rivals kill farmer

LALMONIRHAT. June 5 : A poor farmer was killed by his rivals at Char Gobardhan area in Adhitmari thana, reports UNB.

Police said when the victim Afzal Hossain.35. was taking the calf of co-villager Mansoor All to a pond on May 27 for damaging his crops. Mansoor and his men locked in altercation with him. At one stage, Mansoor stabbed Afzal to death. Police arrested the murderer and a case was filed in this connecUon. Another report says, a madrassa student Shahidur Rahman Li ton. 18, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at Hatibandha thana recently.

Literacy programme progressing

HABIGANJ. June 5 : The activities of "Bikashito Habiganj" under the Total Literacy Movement (TLM) has begun in three thanas to eradicate the curse of illiteracy by 2001, reports UNB.

Under the programme, 137,510 men and women from 11 to 45 age group will be Imparted education. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ahmed Fazlul Rashid inaugurated the programme at Shahjahanpur Union Parlsad office in Madnabpur thana recendy. Some 60,240 people in the thana will be brought under the programme. At the first phase. 30 people have been brought in each of the seven centres in Nablganj and five centres in Chunarughat thanas. TLM has already been introduced in other districts of the country. Some of which have already been completed freeing those areas from the curse of illiteracy.

Valuables worth Tk 3.75 stolen

COMILLA, June 5 : A burglary was committed in the show room of Eastern Electronics Centre at Jhautala in the town on Friday night, reports UNB.

Proprietor of the show room said a gang of burglars stormed into the show room at dead of night and took away valuables worth Taka 3.75 lakh breaking the collapsible gate of the shop. Another report said a youth allegedly committed suicide by cutting his throat by a sharp weapon at a house in Kaliajuri area of the town ccently. The deceased was identified as Mnnjurul, 18. son of Sundar Ali. Police said Manjurul cut his throat with a sharp Dao’ at about 10 am while he was staying at a room of their house. Family sources said he was suffering from mental disorder for long.

Epilepsy patient drowns

RANGAMATI. June 5 : A teen-age girl who was suffering from epilepsy, drowned on Thursday in the Kaptal Lake at Kolabunia in Borkal thana while she was taking bath, police sources quoted the parents for the incidents, reports BSS.

The victim was identified as Fatima Akhtar. 14. Her body' was rescued by the neighbours immediately after drowning. Police handed over the body to her father in the evening on the day after autopsy at Rangamati Sadar Hospital.

KISHOREGANJ. June 5 : The monthly review meeting of the District Administration for the month of May was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner (DC1 on May 31, reports BSS.

The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner A M M Farhad. Matters relating to law and order were discussed in the meeting.

Power bills remain unpaid

NETRAKONA. June 5 : A total of Taka 60 lakh electricity bill has been lying outstanding with different government and semi-government offices for long, reports UNB.

Of tire total. Taka Four lakh remained outstanding with Mohanganj Health Complex, Taka Two lakh with Railway Stations and Taka 25 lakh with other government offices. Besides. Taka 91.000 bills are overdue in each Tirana Revenue Ofice and Mohongonj Poursabha. Taka 51,000 in Food Office Taka 50,000 in Education Office. Taka 40.000 in Thana Land Office, Taka 58.000 in Thana Parisad Dakbunglow, Taka 13.000 in Sub Registry Office, Taka 18,000 in Thana Telephone Office. On the other hand, unpaid bills of different mosques and temples amounting Taka 10 lakh could not be collected from the government.

12,4,109 couples use contraceptives

MADARIPUR. June 5 : Out of a total of 15.5.471 couples 12.4.109 have accepted varius contraceptive methods here in the first five months of the current fiscal years, according to an official source, reports BSS.

Of them. 33.619 couples have accepted contraceptives in Rajoir thana, 40,995 couples in Kalkini, 31,905 couples in Shibchar and 17,590 couples in sadar thana. Besides. District Family Planning Department and several non- government organisations have been working to check baby boom.

Trailing on pisciculture

RANGAMATI. June 5 : Chairman of Rangamati Hill District Council, Ching kew Roaza inaugurated here on Thursday a three-day training course on pisciculture in a function held at sadar thana auditorium as the chief guest, reports BSS. Rangamati District Fisheries Department organised the training. A number of 25 beneficiaries of the ongoing fisheries projects at Langadu, Naniarchar and Kaukhall thanas, funded by World Food Programme, participated in the training course. District Fisheries Officer, Giasuddin Khan chaired the Inaugural function of the training while Thana Nirbahi Officer of Rangamati sadar thana, EKramul Haque and Senior Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Fish Research Institute was present as the special guests.

LGED constructing bridge

TANGAIL. June 5 : Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) Tangail, is constructing a seventy point three metre long bridge over the river Bangshal near Kuralia Bazaar on Kuralia- Disalabid road in Madhupur thana, reports

Official sources said that the bridge is of RRC Box Guarder S?e-construction will be completed within six months. The bridge will help facilitate easy communication in the area.
