OKLAHOMA City. May 4: Tornadoes tore through Oklahoma and Kansas, wiping out whole neighborhoods, killing at least 34 people and injuring hundreds, reports AP.

At least 1.000 homes were destroyed in Oklahoma City alone, police said.

"I heard it. the house started shaking and then the big rumble." said 74-year-old Katherine Burch, who hid in the bathroom of her southwest Oklahoma City home during the storm Monday night. Glass and everything flew in it."

Power lines popped, debris flew and sirens blared as the twister moved from Chickasha to the heavily populated suburbs of Oklahoma City. 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the northeast. The tornado was part of a storm system that moved north into neighboring Kansas.

Police and emergency workers combed through the debris as darkness fell, searching for survivors while tornado warnings remained in effect. Crumpled cars littered two highways.

"It's real chaotic." said Sharia Findley, director of community relations at Hillcrest Hospital. "We've gotten so many patients in I don't know who we have here."

Of the 32 deaths. 26 were in Oklahoma, six in Kansas.

Eight people were killed in Bridge Creek, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southwest of Oklahoma City, said Ben Frizzell, spokesman for the state Office of Emergency Management. He said four other died in Midwest City, a suburb.

Oklahoma City police said at least eight died there. Three

deaths were reported in Moore, just south of Oklahoma City. Another death was reported at Norman Regional hospital, and two more in suburban Del City.

In neighboring Kansas, six were reported dead in Wichita, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) due north, according to officials. At least 80 people were reported injured.

Oklahoma's Midwest Regional Medical Center said it was treating at least 100 injured. as did Midwest's hospital. Other hospitals were reporting injured as well.

"We fear there arc many more." Frizzell said of possible victims.
