Asma Begum, whose only functioning kidney was 'mistakenly' removed by gynecologists during an operation at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) about five months ago, will undergo kidney transplantation today at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMUH).

"The surgeons (urologists) have decided to perform the operation on Tuesday. We are hopeful that things will go smoothly during the operation," said Professor Harun-ur-Rashid, head of Nephrology Department of the BSMMUH?

"Asma is fit to undergo the surgery. Her blood pressure is under control, she has no infection." he said.

Asma's mother Zahura Begum, who agreed to donate one of her kidneys, was earlier admitted to BSMMUH under Prof Rashid's supervision.

"Zahura Begum is also fit for donating kidney for her daughter." Prof Rashid added.

Asma's kidney transplantation would cost over Tk two lakh. She will require post surgery application of cyclosporine drug that helps prevent rejection of kidney for at least three months.

So far the government has not yet taken any action against the doctors who allegedly removed the only functioning kidney of Asma Begum while operating for removal of an 'ovarian tumour' at the DMCH gynaecology operation

theatre on August 11 last year.

The health ministry later formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident but the findings were never made public.
