PESHWAAR: Acute tension gripped Pakistan's North Western Frontier Province in the wake of the killing of ten people in two separate incidents of violence on Sunday, eye witnesses said.

In the first incident, a mob 500 strong in Bannu district came out on the streets to clash with the police after news spread of the death of aTeenager at the hands of a police constable. The ensuing head-on clashes left five people dead including a member of Frontier Constabulary. Police resorted to direct firing in the crowed which burnt down two police stations and pickets with bricks, batons and guns. Still unable to control the mob. the local administration called out the Army and imposed curfew, an official of the local administration confirmed to Daily Star on the phone.

Some reports suggest that the constable, who was Immediately arrested, confessed to the killing of the boy saying that he had become bitter after his relations with the deceased soured.

Already opposition parties and religious groups have turned the issue into one of highhandedness of the Administration against the public.

In the second incident five persons including an Imam of a mosque were killed in Mardan district of the NWFP in a daredevil incident of murderous violence. The killing took place when the Imam along with his companions was sitting in the mosque waiting for iftar time when a group armed men walked into the mosque and fired at them from a close range. Five died on the spot.

Local police denied that it was an incident of sectarian violence and instead categorised it as "outcome of old enmity." But independent reports suggest that sectarian motives may well have been at work. The area has been under the shadow of tensions between the Sunnis, the majority religious sect and the Shias, the minority religious sect for some time.

The two Incidents add to the already long list of troubles involving the public and administration. Last week two hundred people came out to protest against erratic supply of electricity and attacked local office of Water and Power Development Authority. Dozens were held by the police raids in connection with the attack.
