The historic Noor Hossain Day was observed in the country yesterday with renewed pledge to materialise the dreams of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for restoration of country's democracy, reports UNB.

Noor Hossain, a Jubo League leader, who came to the street inscribing Democracy be freed, autocracy be exterminated' on his chest and back, was killed when police of the then autocratic ruler opened fire on an Awami League procession at Zero Point.

His supreme sacrifice cul--minated in a mass upsurge in 1990 and the then autocratic Ershad government was forced to step down handing over power to the caretaker government of Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed.

In observance of the day. different political parties, student bodies and socio-cultural organisations organised elaborate programmes, including placing wreaths, milad mahfil and Qurankhwani.

Bangladesh Awami ShechcHhasebak League and Bangladesh Somajtantrik Dal placed wreaths separately at the Noor Hossain Square to pay homage to the martyr.

Chittagong District Awami League held a meeting at Darul Fazal market in the port city to recall the contributions of the martyrs, including Shaheed Noor Hossain. City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury spoke on the occasion.

Chittagong BCL, Jubo League and Left Democratic Front organised separate rallies to mark the day.
