NEW YORK. Sept 8 (AP/ Internet): Lindsay Davenport. Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras had Mark McGwire on their minds on Monday.

During Monday's rain delay at the US Open, all three found themselves watching baseball.

Davenport saia she Just missed seeing McGwire's 61st homer in his first at-bat.

“I saw it on the replay. Then 1 watched his next three at-bats. Nothing happened." Davenport said.

That was exciting. I was in the referee's office when Sampras and Agassi were there. They were both like staring at the TVs. It's a big day."

JUNIORS UNDER WAY

The junior tournament, where many tennis watchers get their first glimpse of future champions, has begun.

Julien Jeanpierre of France Is top-seeded in the singles for boys 18 and under. He has al-

ready won the Australian Open junior title.

Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, the French Open junior champion. is seeded second, with Roger Federer of Switzerland seeded fourth behind Andreas Vinciquerra of Sweden.

Katerina Srebotnik of Slovenia is the No. 1 seeded player in the girls singles. She won the Wimbledon junior crown.

Nadejda Petrova of Russia, the French Open girls champion is seeded sixth but Jelena Kostanic of Croatia, the junior Australian Open winner, is not entered.

TRIO OF SWEDES

With Magnus Larsson. Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Johansson in the fourth round, it marked the first time since 1987 that three Swedes made it to the round of 16 at the US Open.

There were four in 1987. headed by two future champions. Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg, along with Anders Jar-

ryd and Jonas Svenson.

DOUBLES LOSERS

For the second year in a row at the US Open, the top doubles team of Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge made an early exit.

The Woodies lost in the third round to Cyril Suk and Sandon StoUe. 3-6. 6-3. 7-5.

Last year, the Australians went out in the first round, ending a streak of five consecutive Grand Slam tournament finals. In all. they have won nine Grand Slam doubles titles together. including five straight Wimbledons.

It will be the first time since 1991 they have not won at least one Grand Slam doubles titles, losing in the Australian Open and Wimbledon finals and the round of 16 at the French this year.

"We have high expectations, high standards." Woodforde said. "We have to keep them up, otherwise you start sort of shuffling down in the pack."
