Boy succumbs to injuries

KHULNA. Sept 8: A boy injured seriously by a thief succumbed at Khulna Medical College Hospital on Monday, reports UNB.

Police said. Masum. 14. was axed mercilessly when he saw the man stealing betel-nut at village Chaltabunia in Morelganj thana of Bagerhat district on Friday. Following deterioration of his condition Masum was shifted to the KMCH on Sunday. Another report from Pirojpur adds: A minor girl was crushed under the wheels of a bus on Plrojpur-Nazirpur road on Monday. Dolon. 6. daughter of Moktar Hossain, met her tragic end while the Pirqlpur-bound bus ran over her at Alamkathi in Sadar thana. Trie body was sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

15 hurt in transport labourers' clash

NAOGAON. Sept 8: At least 15 people were injured in a clash between two groups of labour over the plying of Rajshahl mail bus at Rohanpur of Niamatpur thana here on Wednesday, reports UNB.

Witnesses said a compromise meeting between the two Sups of transport workers was called on the day to settle the pute. When the meeting failed to settle the dispute, tension mounted resulting in serious clashes between the workers leaving 15 injured. Three trucks also came under attack during the clash. Later police brought the situation under control.

Separate incidents claim 3 lives

FENI, Sept 8: Three people died in separate incidents during the last two days In the district, police said, reports UNB.

Nur Islam. 25. son of Hafej Mohammad Mostafa at Su-lakhali village in Sonagazl thana allegedly committed suicide by taking poison on Thursday morning. Nurul Huda. 16. a student of class X and son of Ahsanullah of Gopalgaon village in the same thana also allegedly committed suicide by taking poison on Friday. Causes of both the incidents of suicide could not be known immediately. A 12-year old boy named Mamun was killed on the spot when a speeding bus ran over him on Mohipal highway here on Friday morning.

Sweetmeat shops owners evading VAT

NAOGAON. Sept 8: The owners of sweetmeat shops here are evading Value Added Tax (VAT) depriving the government of huge revenue earning every year, reports UNB.

Most of the owners of over 400 sweetmeat shops In 11 thanas of the district do not give any cash memo to the customers though it is obligatory under the existing law and rules. The owners should mention specifically and clearly the amount of VAT against the price which is seldom followed by them, alleged some customers. But majority of the customers are not aware of the matter and do not ask for any cash memo. National Board of Revenue has also asked the owners to hang price tags and stickers at the back of the counter so that the customers can see it easily. The directive is not being followed by them properly. A source said indifferent attitude of the officials and employees of local VAT collectorate encourage the owners to evade the tax.

Various diseases claim 100 cattles

NETROKONA Sept 8: At least 100 cattles have died and over 500 attacked by cattle diseases in the flood-hit areas of the district. reports UNB.

The cattle have been attacked by the diseases locally known as Geisha.' Bakedara,' Golafulla' and other deadly diseases that broke out in the district in an alarming proportion. The badly affected thanas are: Sadar. Barhatta. Mohanganj. Kalmakanda. Durgapur. Purbadhala. Atpara and Madan. Local people said scarcity of medicine has aggravated the situation. Meanwhile, fodder scarcity has turned acute in the district due to the prolongation of flood.

Work on 14 uplift schemes progressing

RAJBARI. Sept 8: Work on 14 uplift schemes here, at a cost of Tk 2.75 crore, for the current fiscal year are progressing fast, reports UNB.

Local Government Engineering Department is implementing the schemes under the Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Programme. The project works included carpeting on three-km connecting road, construction of three box-culverts, one drain and five RCC bridges Official sources said. 40 per cent work has already betn completed add the rest is.expected to be impkvr mented by December 'next. With the implementation of the schemes, the rurahcommunlcation network in the district Will be Improved to a great extent.

Housewife, girl killed in road accidents

NATORE. Sept 8: A housewife and a nine-year-old girl were killed in two separate road accidents on September 3 on Natore-Bogra highway, reports BSS.

Pinjira Begum. 35. was run over by a speeding truck while she was crossing the road at Dakhin Kalikapur. She died on the spot. Rupali. daughter of Oman Ali of village Hashpukuria in Singra thana was run over by a passenger bus at Ronoghata bus stand. She died on the spot, eye witnesses said.

Freshers' orientation programme held

MYMENSINGH, Sept 8: Freshers orientation 1997-98 of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) was held in the Shilpacharya Joynul Abedin auditorium of BAU on September 3. reports BSS.

Tne orientation function was presided over by Prof An-madullah Sarkar, students affairs adviser of BAU. Convenor of the Dean Council Dr Kamrul Hassan and convenor of the Provost Council Dr Akutar Hossain, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Timbers seized

BANDARBAN, Sept 8: The special team of the district Forest Department seized timbers of about 3.OCX) eft from the traffickers during last four months, reports UNB.

The seized timbers have already been auctioned at Tk 10 lakh last month. Official sources said stringent measures are being taken to combat the increasing timber smuggling in the district. They also sought co-operation of the people in this regard.

2 commit suicide in Kotchandpur

JHENAIDAH. Sept 8: Two persons allegedly committed suicide in Kotchandpur thana of Jhenaidah district last week, reports BSS.

Police and hospital sources said Nasima Khatun. 20. a housewife of village Fulbaria committed suicide by taking poison. She was admitted to Kotchandpur thana hospital where she died. One Ukildee. 27. of village Pachalia committed suicide by taking pesticide.

15,292 cattles vaccinated

TANGAIL. Sept 8: A total of 15.292 cattles and 23.9.808 poultry birds were vaccinated during the last financial year in Bashail thana, reports BSS.

Thana livestock department sources said. 5013 catties and 6197 poultry birds were also treated in the period. Besides. 25.027 chicks and 600 ducklings of one-day old. one thousand grown-up fowls and 23.800 eggs of high bread varieties fowls were distributed in the period. Eleven chicks and two duckling hatcry units. 33 poultry. 6 goat and 7 ram farms were set-up in the thana under the supervision of the Livestock Department.

Madhupur yatemkhana's AGM held
