World Food Programme (WFP) has diverted a ship carrying 15.000 metric tons of wheat to Bangladesh as part of Its emergency food assistance In the backdrop of unprecedented flood in the country, reports

The ship 'M/V Golden Sun' was originally carrying the wheat to another country, a press release of WFP said.

The ship now off the coast of Africa is expected to arrive at Chittagong Port by September

An official announcement yesterday said WFP has committed to providing Bangladesh 2.28 lakh tons of foodgrains in response to govemihent's appeal for food aid. It is in addition to WFP's normal contribution.

The wheat being carried by the ship will be enough to provide one month of basic relief food for over 9 lakh flood affected destitute families through the VGF programme. WFP said.

It said the "Golden Sun" vessel is an advance shipment to the WFP relief programme that ultimately might go up to more than 4 lakh metric tons of wheat which will be given to WFP-Bangladesh by various donors.
