Road links between the capital and rest of the country totally snapped yesterday, said the Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department.

"All the major highways connecting the capital with rest of the country have gone under flood waters at different places." he told The Daily Star last night

The road between Tangall and Jamuna Bridge and the ap-

proach roads on both the sides of the bridge were Inundated at places yesterday and movement of transports have been suspended. ne said.

Following continued suspension of the road link between Dhaka and Chittagong, the shipping mlnistiy yesterday decided to introduce ferrv service from Daudkandi (Comilla) to Kanchpur (Dhaka) today on an emergency basis, an official of the ministry said.

As the Padma and Jamuna swelled further, the Bangladesh inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) suspended ferry services at the Aricha. Nata-khola and Nagarbari ghats. snapping the capital's road links with 36 south-western and north-western districts.

The ferryehats at Aricha are at least under three feet water." a senior official of BIWTC said last night.

Ferry service al Mawaghat was suspended on Monday. The Dhaka-Mawa highway' that connects the capital with southwestern districts has already been inundated at several points.

The capital's road links with Sylhet and Narsingdi were cut

off three weeks ago. Sylhet-Sherpur road link has also been snapped.

"No passenger buses left from Gabtoli bus terminal since this morning." Joint Convenor of Bangladesh Inter-district Bus Owners Committee. Zubalr Naim told The Daily Star yesterday.

Bus services from city's two other main inter-district bus terminals— Mahakhali and Saydabad— were suspended two weeks ago following inundation of fresh areas on the highways.

Railway services between Sirajganj and Ishwardi and between Dhaka and Narayanganj were suspended yesterday as the railway tracks went under flood water at several places yesterday.

Additional Director General (Operations) of Bangladesh Railway (BR) NM Knurshid Anower told The Dally Star last night that tracks were submerged at Ullapara near Sirajganj and at Gandarla near Narayanganj.

"We are trying hard to keep the Dhaka-Chittagong train service. Tracks will be further elevated at the flooded points if necessary.' he said.

An additional train will be pressed into service today to transport export items, he said.
