BNP has started "homework" to effectively oppose the Chittagong Hili Tracts (CHT) bills, aimed at giving legal cover to the government-PCJSS agreement signed in December last year.

Four bills on the agreement, approved by the Cabinet last week, are expected to be placed in the Jatiya Sangsad when the current session resumes after the Eid-ul-Azha.

A meeting of the party's Standing Committee, the highest decision-making body, last night discussed the bills, copies of which were distributed among the party lawmakers earlier on the day. meeting sources said.

The meeting felt that the bills should be examined 'meticulously” by legal experts so that the party could ventilate ail its points, legal and political. to back up its stance on the agreement.

In yesterday's meeting, two party MPs. who are not members of the Standing Committee, were invited for taking their legal opinion on the bill. They are Barrister Nazmul Huda and Barrister Jamiruddin Sirkar.

The nearly two-hour meeting from about 8 pm also planned to meet the Speaker shortly to discuss certain things about the passage of the bills.

BNP chief Begum Khaleda Zia presided over the meeting, held at her Minto Road official residence.

A top leader of the party who attended yesterday's meeting told The Daily Star that they may request the Speaker for arranging a general discussion on the proposed bills before their passage.

The meeting also discussed the party's plans for street agitation against the CHT agreement. including a long march towards the CHT sometime after the Eid.
