De Villiers resumed in the morning in the same belligerent fashion that he began his innings on Sunday, reversesweeping Mushtaq for a boundary in the leg-spinners second
. over and then walking down the wicket to Waqar and aiming expansive cover drives at the fast bowler.
The seamer moved from 26 to 46 not out from 67 balls with six boundaries but Sohail claimed his side were never worried that victory might escape them.
'We knew all along that we Just needed two good balls. They were the ones under pressure, not us." he said.
Both century-makers were ignored for the player-of-the-match award, as was Shaun Pollock for his second innings return of six for 50 and 100 runs in the match. The accolade went to Mushtaq for a match haul of nine for 149.
Mushtaq's career continued its sharp rise to greatness in world cricket. Having an armoury of vicious leg-spinners. Suick top-spinners and the best isguised googly the little wizard proven too much for every South African apart from Boucher, who batted with maturity and skill.
Having taken just 44 wickets in his first 18 Tests, Mushtaq has now captured 111 in his second 18 matches.
His performance only highlighted the folly of South Africa's decision not to play a spinner on a pitch always likely to take spin as the match progressed.
"The history of Kingsmead has never warranted a spinner. We felt it was the right decision to include an extra seamer." South African captain Hansie Cronie said after the match.
"Our batting remain the problem and we have been trying to address it since September last year. Naturally we are very disappointed but we are very, very determined to win and square the series in Port Elizabeth on Friday."
