People have started returning to the capital but the city was in holiday mood yesterday, two days after the Eid-ul-Fitr. reports UNB.

Though the three-day Eid holiday ended on Saturday, attendance in the government offices yesterday was not more than 30 per cent.

The scenario was also not much different in the case of non-government organisations and other private establishments. including business houses.

A large number of government officials enjoyed the opening day as an optional holiday yesterday as they didn't want to miss another day with their near and dear ones.'

Almost one-third of the nearly nine million population of the capital was thought to have left the city to enjoy the greatest festival of the Muslims with their families scattered over the country.

Movement of vehicles, specially rickshaws, on roads were much less yesterday than any usual weekday, offering the city dwellers another jam-free day.

Most city markets and shops, which witnessed a mad rush of last-minute shopping by thousands of people till midnight before Eid day. remained closed for the last three days.

However, an official said that a good number of businessmen yesterday came to the banks adjacent to the markets to deposit cash, the sale proceeds from the last day's Eid shopping by people.

Stock prices at Dhaka Stock Exchange also marked a 2.21 per cent rise in the index when the bourse resumed transaction after the Eld yesterday.
