Tribute to Khan Ata

Sir. 1 would like to pay my heartfelt tribute to the departed soul of Khan Ataur Rahman who left us recently. The cultural arena and the film Industry of Bangladesh will suffer a setback with the demise of Khan Ata. He was present in all the cultural arenas nearly for five decades.

Khan Ata was a nationalist and a patriot as depicted in his portrayal of his role in Nawab SerqJuddouila or in the creation of the movie Abaar Tora Manush Ho. The melodious tunes composed by him for film songs will always be cherished by us.

The Joy. sorrow and happiness of life which he went through have been reflected In all his compositions and portrayals. We await release of his latest movie Ekhono Anek RaaL

May Allah rest his soul in peace.

Air pollution

Sir, Air pollution is nothing new to us and so many discussions on It have been published through newspapers and magazines that, nowadays, nobody

feels any necessity to talk about such a (lethal) problem. Dhaka, the capital of our country, is known as the moot polluted city in the world. But it is a hoard-breaking fact that, in spite of being informed, we are not taking any necessary steps to prevent the citizens’ lives.

As a result, the number of Kitlents of various diseases is creasing day by day in Dhaka city. Many are facing unexpected death. Though our present government told us that they would take some measures against it. but. in reality, there is no implementation of their speeches. For example, they said that no car of the ministry would emit smoke. And what about other vehicles and factories of the city? Do they think that only the cars produce the smoke and pollute the air?

! think that actually they do not feel this problem, because they always use cars and at home they are in the AC room.

Electricity required

Sir, The contribution of electricity to our modern life Is endless. But It is a matter of great regret that we. the dwellers a Paul Para belonging to Chak Radha Kania vinue under Fulbaria PS in My-

mensingh district, despite being the inhabitants of the 20th century tilt now are destitute of electricity. Our adjoining villages have been supplied with electricity. Even Ahammadpur. an adjacent para only 100 yards away from Paul Para of our village, in the meantime has been provided with electricity. But our Paul Para has not yet been supplied with electricity.

So till now. we are living in an opaque age. For the privation of electricity people residing tn our Paul Para do not venture to launch electricity-con-ducted works. For instance, the establishment of rice mill, flour mill, shallow machine etc. We do not know the cause behind not to supply electricity in our Paul Para. Though we directly communicated with the authorities concerned, our effort became in efficacious as they did not respond to our appeal.

A tragic Iom

Sir. Ptease allow us to share, through your esteem daily, loss and pain suffered by Dr. Mohi-uddin Farooque's family and friends at his untimely death.

This is nature's one of those cruelties which is very hard to accept. Dr. Mohluddin Fa-rooque. to us. was Farooque Bhat, whom we knew in Dhaka University's law department. He was a friendly soul all through. Even from abroad, we considered ourselves privileged to have known the person, who brought environmental issues at the forefront In such a short period, by setting up Bangladesh Environmental Lawyer's Association (BELA) and him becoming a petitioner tn number of landmark cases.

We believe, the only fitting tribute to Dr. Mohluddin Farooque will be carry forward his mission through BELA and make Bangladesh, a better place to live In, which he. so tragically. could not achieve.

continent. As long as lust for ewer among the political iders, there is no hope of common good In this port at the world.

In Bangladesh, Pakistan and India the trend of monopoly in politics is the threat to peace and progress in this region now. If the will of the people Is reflected on the streets with violence under the umbrella of the political parties, the democratic culture will have a serious setback. Unfortunate killing, violence and unholy alliances among political parties are going on unabated without taking Into account the needs of the common people.

It is good to remember that human resources are more important than that of Information technology or the Internet and material progress. We urge upon the politicians the need to balance between their thoughts and action, between concept and completion, and between government and the opposition.

Spare the highways

Sir. It Is observed that the culture of highway barricade to going on the full-swing by all concerned whoever think they will draw the attention of the concerned and acquire some laurel

Even under normal circumstances travelling in so-called highways are not safe because of multifarious reasons. As a result of which we see occasional painfiil news of death on highways due to rood accidents. Highway Is the place where from even drying of paddy to holding of market, hats-bazars, meeting, processtons etc., causes congestion and delay movement of vehicles ana added with this ia the unwarranted phenomenon of blockade of highways by the various intereeted/pressure groups at their whims and ego. When people take journey by road transport for traveling, there exists already number of adversaries. This blockade of highways adds and multiplies their miseries. When we every body In this country whatever we are doing claim lo be done in the greater interest of the people but when thousands of trarrtters on rood for whom the road has been constructed l.e., movement of passengers and vehicles the miseries they suffer for such road blockade, how can such act be Justified?

It Is a fervent appeal to all concerned to spare the highways from the programme of all political/social activiUes and ensure unhindered movement on the highways
