CHITTAGONG. Dec 11: The two-day hartal called by BNP and its allies ended today amid a tense situation in the three CHT districts while it passed off peacefully in Chittagong.

BNP and its six allies called the hartal dawn-to-dusk today . and yesterday demanding cancellation of the CHT accord.

Official sources said army and BDR personnel deployed at Rangamati yesterday following sporadic clashes were withdrawn today. But a large number of police personnel re'-mained deployed in the three hill districts of Rangamati. Khagrachhari and Banderbon to prevent outbreak of violence.

Meanwhile, the Parbatya Sarbadaliya Oikkya Parishad has decided to put up road barricades in CHT for an indefinite period from tomorrow demanding release of its leaders and ac-.tivists arrested in the last two days.

Sources concerned said a number leaders and activists of BNP and its allies at Khagrachhari and Rangamati had gone into hiding to escape arrest.

Normal life was disrupted in the CHT and the port city today due to hartal. All kinds of vehicle stayed off the roads. In Chittagong, large number of rickshaws, however, were seen

plying from the morning though rickshaws were exempted from hartal after 2 pm.

At Khagrachhari, police dispersed a procession brought out by hartal supporters. No major untoward Incidents were, however. reported from the CHT and from any area in Chittagong.

Most of the shops and offices here remained closed during the hartal hours. Four pickets were arrested.

At Chittagong Port, cargo handling works continued inside the jetties while delivery of goods to and from the port was suspended due to lack of trucks.

UNB adds: The pro-hartal activists attacked the press clubs in Rangamati and Khagrachhari. leaving several journalists injured, burned the effigy of the Prime Minister In Rangamati and 1800 copies of Daily Janakantha in Khagrachhari.
