Oct 9: Former world number one Jim Courier survived a fierce onslaught from Thai teenager Paradom Srichaphan on Wednesday before moving into the second round of the Singapore Open with a 2-6. 6-4. 6-3 win, reports R^aradorn, just 18 and making his ATP debut, took the first set behind some powerful serving to dent the third-seeded American's hope of a second successive title after his Beijing in last week.

But Courier, whose prospects here improved on Tuesday when number one seed Michael Chang went out in the first round to last year's winner Jonathan Stark, began to find his rhythm and his range in the second set.
