Barisal centre of Betar to be commissioned

BARISAL, Sept 8: A 10-kilowatt medium wave fullfledged Bangladesh Betar broadcasting centre here is going to be commissioned soon.
Construction works of the broadcasting centre has already been completed with an expenditure of Taka 18 crore including a foreign currency component of Taka 6.50 crore, official sources said. This project was started during 1995-96 financial year. Construction work of this project was completed by the Technical Associates of Bangladesh (TAB) at Rupa tali. 5 kilometres away from Barisal town and beside Barisal-Jhalakatl Road.
Bianibazar to be declared a pourasava
SYLHET. Sept 8: In a bid to make the public life more dynamic, Bianibazar thana Sadar will soon be declared as a Pourasava. officials here said, reports UNB.
They said the concerned Ministry has directed the Thana Nirbahi Officer (TNO) to send necessary papers for implementation of the proposed Pourasava.
Foundation erf Vet hospital laid
KHULNA. Sept 8: The foundation stone of Taka 42 lakh Khulna Veterinary Hospital was laid at Sher-e-Bangla Road here recently, reports BSS.
Khulna City mayor Sheikh Tayubur Rahman laid the foundation stone at a simple ceremony held in this connection. The hospital Is being constructed to ensure better health care service for domestic animals and birds besides, research and training facilities for doctors and nurses.
Fund shortage hampers jail bldg work
SATKHIRA, Sept 8: Work on construction of the district jail has been stopped due to fund constraint, reports UNB.
According to official sources, the construction work at a cost /Tk 14 crore oegan in 1993 and so far Tk 5 crore has been disbursed. The work remained suspended in mid-way as the authority stopped disbursing the rest amount of money. The reason behind the postponement of allocation could not be known.
2 alleged killers arrested
KAGRAC HARI. Sept 8: Two people were arrested from a village in Chittagong district on Sunday in connection with the killing of a Union Parishad member in Manikchhari thana here, reports UNB.
The arrested — Abdul Jabbar and Premchandra Tripura — were absconding after they were accused in the murder case of Manikchhari Sadar UP member Yusuf who was strangulated to death on the night of July 9. Acting on a tip-off, a special squad of police raided the residence of Premchandra Tripura at North Kanchanpur village in Fatikchhari thana of Chittagong district in the morning. Sensing police presence. Tripura and Jabbar of Tlnchharl village in Manikchhari thana fired gunshots and tried to flee away. But police gheroaed the accused and arrested them along with one rifle and 12 rounds of bullets.
Annual confce of BARD
COMILLA. Sept 8: A two-day annual planning conference of the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) was held on August 26-27 at the BARD auditorium here, reports BSS.
Azizur Rahman. Joint Secretary. Ministry of LGRD and Cooperative inaugurated the conference which was presided over by M Akhtar Hossain Khan. Director General of BARD. Director General of the Rural Development Academy. Bogra Dr M Solaiman and Director. Training. BARD M Khairul Kabir, among others, took part in the discussion. Seventy officials of government and non government establishments and different universities attend the conference.
Madaripur hospital is ailing
MADARIPUR Sept 8: The patients in the Sadar hospital have been facing manifold problems due to lack of basic amenities, reports UNB.
The work on 50-bed hospital was completed in 1994 and soon after the work started for Its upgradation into 100-bed. But later the scheme was dropped. The hospital lacks accommodation facilities for the patients. Everyday 130 to 150 patients are being admitted Into the hospital and most of them are to stay at the floor of the hospital-Staides,. th< W^plial. lacks specialist, physicians, adeqbati tnedlcaF ihstruments and blbod bank. At present it is running without Any consultants for gynae ENT and skln-VD patients with insufficient supply of medicine for a large number of outdoor patients. There is no isolation ward in the hospital for the patients with infectious diseases and emergency patients are not getting expected service for the lack of emergency physicians.
Furniture distributed in health complexes
SATKHIRA. Sept 8: Civil Surgeon Office distributed 45 types of furnitures worth Tk one crore and fifty lakh among seven health complexes and 77 union health complex recently, reports BSS.
The distributed items included chair, table, sofaset, almirah rucks.
Killer husband gets life term
RANGPUR Sept 8: A court here has convicted a man and sentenced him to life term in jail for killing his wife In 1995. reports UNB.
The District and Sessions Judge court also fined the accused, Abdul Kalam Azad. Tk 5000. in default, to suffer another one year RI. According to the prosecution. Azad of village Trofshadi in Mithapukur thana of the district beat his wife Shefali Begum to death on April 24. 1995 as she protested his extramarital affair with a woman in the same village. After examining the witnesses and records. Additional District and Sessions Judge GM Salahuddin handed down the verdict on Tuesday.
15 hurt in BCL-JCD clash
MANIKGANJ, Sept 8: A series of clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists at Debendra University College on Thursday left at least 15 students injured, reports UNB.
Witnesses said the trouble erupted as some BCL supporters allegedly assaulted a JCD leader, Roni, on the campus following their previous enmity. The JCD workers then chased their rivals and brought out a militant procession. But the BCL activists set fire to the JCD-dominated college hostel room No 10. The two groups again locked in a clash, chasing each other More than a dozen students suffered wounds in the clashes. Of them, the condition of Roni was said to be critical.
College teachers in hardship
NOAKHALI. Sept 8: Teachers of nine private colleges of the district have been facing financial hardships for not getting the government portion of their salary, reports UNB
The colleges are: Maijdee Public College. Chaprashirhat College. Joyrag College, Hanlf Bhuiyan College. Kazir Public School and College. Chatkhil Monila College. Kankirhat College. Baliakandi College and Hatiya Adarsha College. These colleges have been affiliated duly by the Comilla Board. But the teachers of these colleges have been deprived of the government benefit due to lack of necessary clearance. The authorities of the colleges, through TNOs and DC, have sent their applications to the Education Ministry seeking necessary clearance.
Construction of bridges demanded
MADARIPUR, Sept 8: Rural communication is being hampered greatly in absence of bridges on the rivers Kumar, Arialkhan and Sheikhpur in the district, reports UNB.
Local people have been demanding construction of a bridge on Bhanga-Mawa route on the river Arialkhan and another bridge on Madaripur-Shariatpur route on the same river since long as hundreds of vehicles are plying on the route everyday. There is also no bridge on the vital Shibchar-Madaripur route on Sheikhpur river. Hundreds of commutes of Madaripur old town area are facing problems in the absence of a bridge on Kumar river. In BSCIC estate area steps were taken earlier to construct two bridges — one on the river Kumar and another on river Sheikpur — but the projects are yet to be started.
Rural people who are to come to the district headquarters for various reasons everyday have to face a lot of problems in the absence of bridges on the vital routes.
Concern over illegal toll collection
NARSINGDI, Sept 8: The illegal toll collection at various river ghats in the district and from the sailing boats carrying different commodities has turned acute, reports UNB
The boatmen and businessmen are hostages at the hands of armed extortionists who are under the umbrella of local influential. A large quantity of various commodities are carried from one commercial centre to another through the river routes of the region which covers the district and thana sadars, including different local hat-bazars of Narsingdi. Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Narayanganj and KishoreganJ districts Jute and other agri-proaucts in huge quantity from these ghats are also carried to different mills and factories of the capital and Narayanganj Organised extortionists collect Tk 50-100 from each boat on the river forcibly and they physically assault the sailors and businessmen on refusal to pay the tolls.
