CHANDPUR, July 6 : Chandpur police seized a huge quantity of fertiliser worth aoout Taka 20 lakh from a godown of Shahjalal Traders at ghat no 5 in the town.

The staffers of the godown failed to show any valid document in favour of their stocks. When police raided the godown the owner of the godown. Hazi Sagir Mia was found absconding.

Police arrested four persons.

A case has been registered with Chandpur Police in this connection.

Diarrhoea claims

6 lives

Six persons died and 20 others attacked with diarrhoea in different areas of the district recently.

About 50 to 60 diarrhoea patients are being admitted in Matlab ICDDRB Hospital daily.

According to the Civil Surgeon's office sources, many medical teams are working in different areas of the district. Scarcity of saline and other medicines has been prevailing in the district.

Arsenic scare

Arsenic scare has gripped Matlab thana in the district as about 20 persons have been affected with arsenic poisoning

Some people of the affected area brought tubewell water at

N1PSOM, Dhaka for test. Arsenic was detected in the sample. People are now drinking water from ponds as 200 tubewells have been sealed recently.

Public Health Engineering Department PHED has been informed about the situation.

Law, order situation worsens

The law and order situation in the town and seven other thanas of the district has deteriorated during the last few months.

Crimes like dacoity. theft, hijacking, murder, gambling, rape, acid throwing are now rampant In the district.

Police recently arrested eight dacoits while committing dacoity inside launches in the river Meghna.

Aman farming Programme

Transplanted aman cultivation scheme has been taken up in the district during the current season.

About two lakh hectares of land In seven thanas of the district have been brought under aman cultivation scheme. About one lakh hectare of land will be brought under High Yielding Variety (HYV). The rest will be Drought under local variety.
