CHITTAGONG. Apr 3: National Professor Dr Nurul Islam has warned against Professional blood donors who are rich reservoirs of various diseases and said screening of blood is essential to exclude the infected blood before transfusion, reports BSS.

He said malaria, syphilis, several viral diseases of the liver and AIDS can all be transmitted from the donors to the recipients, according to a press release.

Prof Islam, the founder pres ident of the University of Science and Technology (USTC) at Chittagong, was giving his presidential speech at the opening ceremony of blood transfusion services at the USTC yesterday.

He said recent developments in science and technology have facilitated safe blood transfusion. which, if improperly used, can bring disasters.

He said the USTC has facilities for conducting the tests re-Siuired for screening blood be-ore transfusion. However, he hoped 'that the national AIDS committee would extend all possible help.

City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury inaugurated the blood transfusion services as the chief guest while Health Secretary Muhammad All was the special guest.
